More Info About Initiating Projects & Collaborations
Because I am contacted often about collaborating, I’ve compiled a few notes to answer common things that come up. I look forward to working with you soon.
Spec work: Work that is unpaid or paid through “experience” or “exposure” will not be accepted. I rarely do this kind of work, and spinning it as a “collaboration” does not mean that I should not be paid for my time, effort, and expertise.
The creative process is more extensive than you think: If you’ve never worked with an artist, it may surprise you how long the creation process takes. Or it may surprise you that I charge more than what you might find on cheap gig websites. As I’ve explained thoroughly elsewhere, this is because we as a society devalue artists. However, I also feel there is a lack of understanding of everything that goes into the creative process. Please check out this article to get a better understanding of that!
Budgets: Please note that I no longer give estimates without first having a budget from the project manager. Please determine a target range that is suitable for your team. If this field is left empty, I will still ask for it before moving forward. You can determine your maximum by asking yourself “what is the most I would pay for this project?” The minimum can be determined by asking yourself “how much is this project worth to me?”
This is important because I can work within a variety of budgets. With a budget range, I can give you multiple options at several price points, each with their own pros and cons. Please don’t send me a message that says “I don’t know how much to spend.” There are no standard prices for art projects, and each estimate I give is customized based on project scope, timeline, budget, as well as a number of other factors. Please ask yourself the above questions and do some research, and then trust me to give you a fair price.
Contracts: To me, contracts are about (1) protecting both myself and my client and (2) laying out clear guidelines for a given project. Before you contact me, please look over this article, as I will ask you about how you intend to use the art and whether you need exclusive rights. It will save us time and let us focus on the details of your cool new project.
Do you accept all projects? Unfortunately, I can’t accept every project that comes my way. Please understand that not every project will be a good fit for me, and I am not always the best fit for every project. I also must continue to pay my bills, and so sometimes must say no to a project. This could be because I have too many other projects going on or because the time and effort I would need to put into it don’t match the budget.
This is not a judgment on you or your project. Please continue to do amazing things, and even if I reject your project, I hope we can work together in the future.
